“In a significant turn to the on-going events in Kashmir, civil and police officials have started to decline duty or orders from their superiors.
In Bandipora district, two police personnel namely Mehraj ud din Lone S/O Muhammad Maqbool Lone (constable) and Bilal Ahmed Rather S/O Muhamamd Akbar Rather belonging to Naidkhai area have resigned from their services on Monday.
Constable Bilal, while speaking to Greater Kashmir, said that he took the step “as his conscience did not allow him to
carry out orders which were putting his fellow citizens at risk.”
He called upon police personnel to “exercise restraint in dealing with protesters”, saying “Bullet was no answer to protests or stones.”
In Kupwara district, Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) Munawar Ahmed has been suspended by DC Kupwara after he declined to take charge as duty magistrate in the district. A duty magistrate, as per general practice, is supposed to give orders for opening fire in a given situation.”
